Even Rubycon caps can fail...
Well folks, nothing in this world in infallible. Even the venerable Rubycon is not immune to failure. This was a socket 478 Compaq board I repaired for a friend. Surprisingly, it was an all Rubycon affair! Note the position of the failed cap, near the DIMM slot. I believe this cap failed because its ripple current specs were exceeded. Maybe the OEM cut a few corners and neglected this aspect of the design. I replaced the 1500uF, 6.3V Rubycon with a 1500uF, 16V United Chemicon LXZ.
